As of September 2026, asphalt producers still face a familiar baghouse problem: the plant is ready to run, but the dust collector is asking for attention. Pressure drop rises, rows pulse more often, bags wear near the bottom or dust appears where it should not. These symptoms are easy to call old bags. Often, they are a useful map of heat, moisture, abrasion and fit inside the collector.
Hot aggregate drying sends fine mineral dust, combustion gas and water vapor toward the baghouse. The dust cake is part of the filtration process, but it must release during cleaning and fall into the hopper. If gas temperature, moisture or airflow moves outside the expected range, the cake can become difficult to remove. If coarse particles reach the bags at speed, local abrasion can shorten bag life. A filter bag must handle the plant condition as well as the dust.
Pressure drop increases as dust builds, while condensation can cause bag blinding. The lesson for a buyer is practical: temperature history and moisture events matter as much as diameter and length.
Needled aramid felt is widely used in dry, high-heat pulse-jet baghouses, including asphalt applications. It offers more heat tolerance than standard polyester and useful resistance to repeated flexing and abrasion. Aramid is not a blanket answer, however. High moisture at elevated temperature can accelerate hydrolysis, while some chemical conditions may point to another media or finish. Continuous temperature, short peaks, fuel type, reclaimed asphalt percentage, shutdown behavior and current bag life should be reviewed together.
Bottom holes can suggest a bag that is too long, a damaged cage, inlet abrasion or missing wear protection. A loose or leaking top can point to snap-band size, tube-sheet condition or installation technique. A hard, greasy cake may call for a moisture, burner or surface-treatment review before increasing pulse frequency. Repeated seam failures deserve a construction check. Copying only the old bag dimensions can preserve the same weak point.
